Meridian Toast

Now forming in Meridian, Mississippi, founding members wanted

Public speaking terrifies you? Same here.

Meridian Toast is a new public speaking club for people who dread public speaking, started by someone who does too.

We're gathering our first group now. The first meeting date and place will be picked together by the founding members. Joining the interest list just means you hear about it first. It is not a commitment to attend, and it is definitely not a commitment to speak.

  • Always free to visit
  • You can always pass
  • No speaking on your first visit

What happens at a meeting

Meetings run about an hour, start on time, and end on time. It's a small group sitting in a circle or around a table, not a stage, not a lecture hall. Here is the whole thing, so there are no surprises:

  1. 5 min

    Welcome

The host says hello, explains the plan for the night, and introduces any guests. Guests are never singled out or put on the spot.

  2. 15 min

    Short prepared talks

Two or three members give talks they signed up for in advance, usually 3 to 5 minutes. Nobody is ever assigned a talk, you book one when you feel ready, whether that's week two or month six.

  3. 15 min

    Table Topics Always optional

Fun, low-stakes impromptu questions, “What's the best meal you've ever had?”, answered in a minute or two. Raise your hand if you want one. Passing is completely normal and nobody will ask why.

  4. 15 min

    Kind feedback

Each speaker hears one specific thing that worked and one specific thing to try next time. That's the formula. No roasting, no rankings, no scoring.

  5. 5 min

    Wrap-up

We pick roles for next time, again, only for people who volunteer, and you head home. That's it.

You climb in tiny steps, at your speed

There is no schedule you're supposed to keep up with. Most people spend their first few meetings on the early steps, and some stay there a while. All of these count as participating:

  1. Just watch

Come, sit, listen, leave when you need to. Watching is a complete and respectable way to attend.

  2. Run the timer or the sign-in sheet

Real jobs that keep the meeting running, with almost no talking required.

  3. Read something short

Read the welcome, a quote, or the word of the day from a card. Thirty seconds, script in hand, sitting down if you prefer.

  4. Answer one fun question

A one-minute Table Topic, from your seat, on a question you can pass on and pick another.

  5. Give feedback to someone else

Two or three minutes, following the simple formula. Many people find helping someone else easier than being the speaker, and it's how the whole club improves.

  6. Give a short talk you practiced at home

Three to five minutes on anything you like, when, and only when, you decide you're ready to book it.

The one rule: you can always pass.

Every part of every meeting is voluntary. If your name comes up and you don't want to, you say “pass,” and we move on in the same breath. No explanation, no apology, no awkward silence, no one trying to talk you into it afterward.

Need to step out for air mid-meeting? Go. Need to leave early? Go. Nobody will follow up asking what happened. This club was built by someone who understands exactly why those exits matter.

Why this club exists

“I started Meridian Toast because public speaking is one of my biggest fears, and I got tired of that fear making decisions for me. I couldn't find a local group that felt safe enough to walk into, so I'm building the one I wished existed: small, kind, free, and with absolutely no pressure to perform.”

“If that sounds like the room you've been wishing for too, you're exactly who this is for.”

Honest answers

Does it cost anything?

No. Visiting is free, and the club is free while we're forming. There are no dues, no sign-up fees, and nothing to buy. If that ever changes someday, members would vote on it first, it won't be a surprise.

Do I have to speak at my first meeting?

No. Most guests don't speak at all at their first meeting, and that's the expected, normal thing. You'll be welcomed, you'll watch, and you can leave without saying a word in front of the group.

When and where do you meet?

That is genuinely not decided yet, and founding members get a say in it. When you join the interest list below, you can tell us which days and times would actually work for you. We'll pick the option most people can make, announce it here and by email, and keep the same day, time, and place every meeting after that.

What if I panic, freeze, or need to leave?

Then you step out, and it's fine. It has happened or will happen to most of us. You can sit back down when you're ready, or head home and come back next time. Nobody will make it A Thing.

Is this Toastmasters?

No. Meridian Toast is an independent, local club. We're similar in spirit (regular practice with kind feedback), but we are not a Toastmasters club and are not affiliated with Toastmasters International. That also means no Toastmasters dues and no required program: we keep the parts that help and skip the parts that don't.

Who is this for?

Adults (18+) around Meridian who want to get more comfortable speaking: for work presentations, job interviews, meetings, church or community roles, weddings, or just ordering your own life out loud. You do not need experience. You especially do not need confidence, that's the thing we're all here to build.

I'm not anxious. I just want speaking practice. Am I welcome?

Absolutely, confident speakers make the room better for everyone, and you'll get real practice and real feedback. The only requirement is that you honor the club's culture: patient, kind, and never pushing anyone past where they want to go.
